During the time of Peter the Great, there was an oval pond in the bosquet “Menageriy Pond”, where, according to legend, the royal jester swam in a boat. In the middle there was an island with a gazebo, where Peter I liked to retire. He himself was actively interested in the creation of this bosquet and supervised some of the work. Rare species of waterfowl were kept in the Menageria; houses were built for them along the perimeter of the pond.
