The Karpiev Pond was created in 1714-1716 at the second stage of the Summer Garden planning, as part of a specially designed chain of cascading ponds, which also included the now defunct Tsvetochny, Foreliev and Melnichny ponds. These reservoirs were created both for land reclamation purposes to drain and improve the park area, and for fish farming.

The pond was restored first in 1961-1962, and then in 2010-2011 during the large-scale restoration of the Summer Garden.
