The plant got its name from Scylla (Skilla) – a sea deity with dog heads and dolphin tails. Homer, Apollodorus, Herodotus, Plutarch in their writings mentioned a monster with 6 dog heads and 12 legs. The name Scylla (Greek “tearing”) was often used with the name Charybdis (Greek “sucking”). In the myths of ancient Greece, these are two sea monsters lying in wait for ships sailing along the Strait of Messina near the island of Sicily. Today, the popular expression “between Scylla and Charybdis” means danger lurking on both sides.<\/h4>\n
