Spring is rapidly coming into its own, and in the Summer Garden the first snow-white snowdrops have begun to appear from under the snow.

Botanists call “snowdrops” Galanthus (Galanthus nivalis L.) of the Amaryllis family. The name is derived from the Greek words “gala” – milky and “anthos” – flower. In horticultural culture, they have been used since 1500 for bouquet plantings in flower beds.

Low (up to 10 cm) perennial bulbous plant with linear leaves. The flowers are white with a green spot, drooping with a pleasant aroma. Snowdrops bloom first and their flowering time depends on weather conditions, flowering can last for a month.
