Growing plants in space is good not only for the physical but also for the mental health of astronauts. Gardening has been proven to relieve stress, provide a sense of well-being, and reduce anxiety.
The first plants in space were corn seeds, the suborbital flight took place in 1946 on a V-2 rocket. In 1960, the experiment was repeated, this time the seeds of wheat, corn, onions and peas flew around the Earth. Plants went into orbit along with Belka and Strelka on the Sputnik spacecraft.
A study on the stay of seeds in outer space was carried out in 2007-2008. The scientists wanted to identify changes in the structure of the grains after being in outer space, to evaluate their germination.
The first seeds that sprouted in space in 2016 in the world press reported that the International Space Station for the first time in the history of mankind grew a zinnia flower.
