SUMMER GARDEN PATHWAYS
April has crossed its half, which means that very soon our gardens will be able to receive visitors again. But before that, we will tell you about the large-scale restoration work on the central alley of the Summer Garden, which is also coming to an end.
The fact is that all the paths in the gardens of the Russian Museum are stuffed. This is a three-layer structure consisting of sand, crushed stone and granite screenings. With the daily load that our paths experience, and on average up to a thousand people pass through the central alley of the Summer Garden, they periodically require repair and restoration.
During the repair of the paths, the top layer of granite screenings is removed along the entire length, surveyors use theodolites to draw up a leveling plan: the pits fall asleep, the hills are removed. Pegs are installed on which the leveling profile is attached, and a new screening is subsequently laid out on it. Then the entire area is shed with a large amount of water, compacted with a roller and finally tamped with a vibrating plate. After completing all the procedures, our famous tracks are obtained.
As it is written in the technological map – “the coating is considered sufficiently compacted if thin round objects (wire, knitting needle, nail) are pulled out of the coating without violating the integrity of the top layer.”
Therefore, in order not to disturb visitors, work on the restoration of the roadway takes place in April, while the garden is closed to dry. And visitors are not upset because of the noise and dust and walk along the already repaired paths.
We are waiting for you for a walk along the restored path in May. In the meantime, we have prepared for some more interesting facts from the closed life of our gardens. Stay with us!
