GOOSE ONION FLOWERS IN THE GARDEN
In the Mikhailovsky and Summer Gardens, the GOOSE ONION (genus Gagea, family Liliaceae) blooms. Two species of this bulbous plant are found in the Leningrad region.
More often you can find a small goose onion (G. minima), it grows in meadows and edges, near thickets of bushes, in gardens and parks. It is a plant with narrow (1-5 mm) leaves. If you carefully dig the soil at the base of the stem, then next to the mother bulb, several daughter bulbs will be found.
The second species – yellow goose onion (G. lutea) – is much less common, prefers broad-leaved forests in the southern regions of the region. Differs in wider leaves (about 1 cm).
