The Russian name for hellebore is associated with its flowering in early spring, even during frosts. Academician P.S. Pallas, who studied the flora of Russia at the end of the 18th century, encountered this plant and was surprised by its endurance and gave it this name. The Latin name comes from two Greek words “elao” – to kill and “bora” – food. Thus, the name warns about the toxicity of the flower. Another name for hellebore is “Christ’s Rose”
