Planting an oak tree from the Summer Garden in Volzhsky

A special ceremony took place in the city of Volzhsky the other day — planting a sapling of Peter the Great’s oak tree from the Summer Garden on the territory of the Botanical Garden of the Rusinka Children’s Art Center. This little oak tree, born from the legendary oak tree, which is more than 370 years old, will now become a living symbol of the historical connection between St. Petersburg and Volzhsky.

The memorial oak tree of Peter the Great is a unique tree growing on the territory of a city that has not yet been founded. We collect its acorns and grow seedlings that are sent to different parts of the country.

The chief keeper of the gardens of the State Russian Museum, Alexandra Alekseeva, personally came to the forum “PRO city, people and meaning” and presented this small green gift to the residents of Volzhsky. Alexandra Nikolaevna emphasized that the landscape is not just green spaces, it is an emotional space to which a person becomes attached and returns again and again. The planting ceremony was attended by the mayor of the city of Volzhsky Igor Voronin.

We are glad that the traditions of caring for nature and culture continue and find a response in new cities of Russia!
