Phraseologism “At Charlemagne” means “at the fence of the Summer Garden from the side of the Mikhailovsky Castle.” This fence was created according to the drawing of the architect Ludwig Ivanovich Charlemagne, from whose works the famous building of the Alexandrovsky Lyceum on Kamennoostrovsky Prospect, the Tea House pavilion in the Summer Garden, the building of the fire department and the Ministerial dacha on Kamenny Island have survived to this day.

However, the most famous work of the architect turned out to be the lattice decorating the southern border of the Summer Garden. It is not as majestic as the fence of Yu. M. Felten, but no less beloved among Petersburgers. The fence consists of alternating links decorated with the head of Medusa the Gorgon. In the center of the fence is the entrance to the Summer Garden from the side of the Moika River.

Petersburgers, making an appointment at the southern entrance to the Summer Garden, say: “We will meet at Charlemagne’s,” which is why this wording does not require any additional clarifications.
