In the compositional solution of a garden or park, the bridge is not only a utilitarian solution to overcome various obstacles, but also an architectural decoration of the garden. In the gardens and parks, from the bridges, beautiful views of the surface of the pond, river bends or ravines opened up.
As Vasily Alekseevich Lyovshin wrote in his book “Complete Gardening” at the beginning of the 19th century: “It would be tiring for the eyes if all bridges were built according to the same model. Nature and art give a lot of cases for the invention of change. Sometimes bridges can be simple and without any embellishment, sometimes smart and ornate. “
For example, the bridge built by Rastrelli between two Baroque ponds was wooden and devoid of any decorations. But the cast-iron bridge, which was made according to the project of Carl Rossi, turned out to be very beautiful. Although it stood buried in the ground for almost a century.
There were also bridges in the gardens of the Russian Museum, which not only decorated the garden, but also entertained visitors. Such was the Shutishny bridge across the Cross Canal in the Summer Garden. The bridge served not only as a ferry, but also as a fountain. On this bridge were located watering tubes, which poured water over the guests of the imperial gardens of Peter I. This bridge has not survived to this day.
Enjoy your walks in the gardens of the Russian Museum. Without fear, admire the water surface of the ponds of the Mikhailovsky Garden from the Rossi cast-iron bridge.
