It was Ivan Matveev (Ugryumov), such a double spelling of the name of this master builder in historical literature was formed because in the documents of the beginning of the 18th century he was called Ivan Matveev. By name, he was Ivan Matveevich Ugryumov.

Very little information is available about the life of Ivan Matveevich Ugryumov. He was probably born in the 60s of the 17th century. This assumption is based on the fact that in 1702 Ivan Ugryumov was already a master, and in those days they became masters only after 30 years. His place of birth is unknown. The place of death of Ivan Matveev is Shlisselburg, he died in the summer of 1707. There is no information about the family.

The first mention of Ivan Matveev was found in the list of the Life Guards of the bombardier company of the Preobrazhensky regiment for 1702, where he is listed as a master. By modern standards, Ivan Matveev was a military engineer who should supervise the construction of fortifications, the construction of military camps and similar works. But the bombing company was commanded by Captain Pyotr Alekseevich (Peter I). Therefore, this company everywhere accompanied the king. In addition to participating in hostilities, where the company showed miracles of heroism, company employees participated in arranging the life of Peter I in military campaigns. The most skilled and quick received personal orders of the king. So in 1703, Ivan Matveev was entrusted with the arrangement of the Summer Courtyard in St. Petersburg.

Ivan Matveev proceeds to remake the estate of the Swedish landowner Erich von Konow in the royal residence. Not being an architect, Matveev accurately implements the orders of Peter I or his right hand Menshikov. In 1703, under the leadership of Ivan Matveev, a wooden manor house was transferred from the center of the garden to the banks of the Neva – to where the Summer Palace is now located.

In 1704, for planting various plants, Ivan Matveev was sent from Moscow gardeners, whom he leads and decorates the garden according to the plans of the king. Work is continuing on preparing the territory for the installation of the Summer Garden.

The following year, under the leadership of Ivan Matveyev, a Havanese was dug in front of the southern facade of the still wooden Summer Palace. A fountain bowl of the first fountain, which was located on the first platform from the Neva, was also built. But the first jets of water clogged in the fountain only in 1706. The master did the work well, and by the end of 1705 he received a letter from Peter I. “Later, I made sure that you were handed over to you and left, so that you could prepare piles of old and unpaved, a great wheel [for example dіametr ѳutov 20 Aglinsky heights], also two with fingers and a few gears; this is necessary for cocking water Kontannam, and in the spring to interrupt the small river, which goes by the yard of Moyevo [to whom I send my opinion, I’ll take a drawing]; and prepare everything, as well as what you yourself can add; but do not begin to let me know before you. I also recall that the present governor wrote to the governor about the deepening [of the current time on ice] of my Havanese, so that she could travel everywhere at 8 depth, and so that it would be corrected. ” A.F. Bychkov. Letters and papers of Emperor Peter the Great, Volume 2. 1887 Letter No. 994.

In the spring of 1706, the king’s mission was completed, and a new decree comes. In it, Ivan Matveev was commanded: to transfer all the outbuildings to a small river; lead pipes to the fountain from the water intake wheel; to make two more wheels and bring a stone for finishing two more fountains. The decree can be read in the illustrations. Ivan Matveev successfully copes with this task, and in the summer the first fountain earned.
In 1707, work was planned to disassemble the transferred Swedish house and build a new wooden Summer Palace, but Ivan Matveev could not complete this task because he died.
In composing the message, materials from the publications of V.A. Korenzvita and A.E. Uhnalova.

It is unknown what Ivan Matveevich Ugryumov looked like, neither descriptions nor portraits have been preserved. We can only assume that he wore the uniform of the scorer of the Preobrazhensky regiment. The age at the time of work in the Summer Garden is 35-45 years.
