In 1980, tulips were sent aboard the Salyut 6 space station. Scientists assumed that flowers would bloom in space. Unfortunately, the miracle did not happen then – the tulips withered the next day. Upon returning from the flight, cosmonaut V. Lyakhov desperately said: “Apparently, no one can live in space!” But Heroes of the Soviet Union can also make mistakes.

In space, flowers will smell differently than on Earth. The aroma of a flower depends on many conditions. And some skillfully use this. The scents of various types of roses grown on the space shuttle Discovery provided the basis for Shiseido’s Zen perfume.

Since the late 90s, Russian scientists have been conducting research, they are working on creating a space greenhouse. There is a Lada greenhouse on the ISS, in which potatoes, radishes, barley, etc. are grown. However, many goals are pursued: from purely scientific interests to relieving the stress of astronauts in extraterrestrial conditions.

Happy Cosmonautics Day!
