TWO-FACED JANUS
Copy from an original by an unknown sculptor. Early 18th century
Janus in ancient Roman mythology is the god of entrances and exits, the beginning and end of the war. As a rule, he is depicted with two faces facing in opposite directions – to the past and the future. The first month of the year, January, is named after Janus. The sculpture is placed in the northern part of the parterre of the Summer Garden.
