A postcard is an item that can be found in every home. Whether it’s an open letter, a greeting card, or a keepsake card in a historic location. For many, this is just a cardboard with a beautiful picture, but there are also real collectors. This hobby is called PHILOCARTIA – one of the most common types of collecting – the study and systematization of postcards.

Philokartiya originated at the end of the 19th century, when the mass production of postcards began, which received international distribution as the cheapest type of postal item. The first postcard was issued in 1869, but by 1875, 231.5 million open letters had been sent in the member countries of the Universal Postal Union.

Of course, over the 10 years of the existence of the branch “Summer Garden, Mikhailovsky Garden and Green Areas of the Museum” a small collection of historical postcards with views of our gardens has been collected. Today we share some of them.
