ALLEGORY OF ARCHITECTURE
Copy from the original by P. Baratta. Early 18th century
The sculpture “Architecture” was specially made by order of Peter I.
This statue can be considered a symbol of the new capital of Russia, St. Petersburg, being built on the banks of the Neva. The presented attributes of architecture – a detailed drawing and compasses, and the corner of a rusticated wall (architectural element) symbolize the flowering of engineering and the development of architecture.
