In January 1971, the newspaper “Vecherny Leningrad” published an article “Where the best in the world stands from fences …”. It tells about the preparations for the restoration of the foundations of the Nevsky fence of the Summer Garden.

In the second half of the 20th century, the subsidence of the basement granite blocks of the Nevskaya fence of the Summer Garden became noticeable. It was necessary to resolve the issue of saving the fence.

For help, the director of the Summer Garden, Kira Mikhailovna Egorova, turned to the Leningrad Civil Engineering Institute (LISI). For two years, the research was carried out by the team of the Department of Foundations, Foundations and Soil Mechanics, which was headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences Boris Ivanovich Dalmatov (the author incorrectly indicated his name in the article).

Thanks to a comprehensive survey of the foundation of the fence and the soil on which it stands, the cause of subsidence was identified, and methods for its elimination were proposed. The foundation repairs were carried out in the coming years.

Enjoy your walks in the gardens of the Russian Museum. We remind you that on Tuesdays the Summer Garden and all branches of the museum are closed. You can walk around the Mikhailovsky Garden and Engineering Square.
