It is interesting to compare photographs of different eras taken from almost the same place. Black and white photo of the Main Alley of the Summer Garden was taken at the end of the 19th century. Color photography this year. Many differences can be seen.

Notice the two sculptural groups at the edges of the photo, they are now in a different location. By the way, did anyone recognize these sculptures? Answers in the comments.

If you look at a modern photograph, you can clearly see the strip of sky between the trees of the alley. This is necessary for the full development of plants. This effect is achieved by regular pruning of tree crowns. A photograph from the late 19th century shows how the crowns of trees are closed. Because funding for garden maintenance was imperfect.

The most interesting can be seen next to the sculpture “Diana”. To the right of it is a kerosene lantern. At the end of the 19th century, the Summer Garden was illuminated in the dark. These lanterns disappear from the garden at the beginning of the 20th century. But no one was able to use electric lamps to illuminate the Summer Garden. Therefore, in the XXI century, the Summer Garden is not lit in the evening. But there is no light pollution, and the birds that live in the Summer Garden are in more natural conditions.

Enjoy your walks in the gardens of the Russian Museum. Keep in mind that it is short daylight hours. If you want to make beautiful photos, then come to the Summer Garden early. And if you want to take a romantic walk along the dark alleys of the garden, now you can come as early as 17.00.
